it’s officially that time of year, time to harvest it’s officially that time of year, time to harvest #cowchow 🌽 this picture is from @dutchhollowfarm a few harvest seasons ago, but the goal is still the same — harvest a high quality crop at the right moisture content (while dealing with Mother Nature and waiting for the ground to be dry enough that it’s safe to get equipment in and out of fields) and then pile it up and pack it down to begin the fermentation process. A good portion of our cows diets contain fermented feed that is planted, grown, and harvested on farmland our farmers either own or rent. The “pickled grass” and “pickled corn” we feed is packed down and then covered with white plastic for protection from the elements, allowing our farmers to feed a highly digestible nutrition source to our cows for the next year, weather its 9 degrees with a foot of snow or 90 degrees outside, because cows LOVE consistency. The fermented feed is carefully analyzed by our dairy nutritionists who formulate diets for each group of animals, targeting their specific needs and supplementing at the micronutrient level to make sure the cow’s diet contains everything she needs to succeed. for our farmers, it means a very narrow window of time that a whole lot has to get done of the farm, in addition to the daily tasks of feeding, milking, and caring for the cows. Truly, it takes a VILLAGE, and it’s all hands on deck this time of year to make sure it all gets done. Have questions? Ask a farmer! 🥛

fresh local dairy, making it’s way to you 🚚 last fresh local dairy, making it’s way to you 🚚 last week one of our longtime @hudsonvalleyfresh drivers Larry made a milk delivery to @dutchesscountyfairgrounds for the Eastern New York Holstein Club’s annual Black & White Show — it had us feeling excited about the 180th Dutchess County Fair, just a month away! 🎡 chocolate milk is always a hit for “kids” of all ages, and who could turn down a “legendairy” fair milkshake — come find both in Rhinebeck August 25th-30th, and if you can’t wait until then pick up some of the good stuff at your local grocery store or market! 🥛
the stars of the show and our top priority as farm the stars of the show and our top priority as farmers — the cows! 🐮 truthfully, they are appreciated all 365 days of the year (some in particular can’t let you walk by without an ear scratch) but today’s a great reminder to pause and be thankful for the opportunity to be stewards of not only the land, but caretakers of these animals — ensuring they are well-fed, comfortable, kept cool, and attended to by highly trained veterinarians, hoof trimmers (for pedicures), and dairy nutritionists (to make sure they are given every macro and micronutrient required) in addition to the team at the farm that provides them with daily care (and aforementioned ear scratches!) ⭐️ it’s a team effort, a labor of love, full of long days and late nights… but in the end, a healthy, comfortable cow makes the highest quality milk 🥛 so we take care of the land and the cows, and the land and cows take care of us, providing nourishment for our families and other families to enjoy some real dairy in their coffee, with cereal for breakfast, or a chocolate milk to refuel after a workout 💪 thank MOO!! 🐄

HVF producer spotlight: meet @dutchhollowfarm! 💚 HVF producer spotlight: meet @dutchhollowfarm! 💚 a multi-generational family farm where at present, three generations farm together in Schodack Landing, NY (to be fair, the fourth generation is on-farm, too, but still riding in the buddy seat or in diapers #farmkidlife) 🚜 pictured is Emily & Nathan who work together on caring for the young stock on the farm — the Chittenden family raises Jersey Cows, those small-framed, dished-face little brown cows that definitely DON’T make chocolate milk, but DO produce higher butterfat levels that make for some pretty great dairy products! 🧈 it’s always a busy time of year on the farm, but this time of year is EXTRA busy at Dutch Hollow as they have a short window of time to finish planting and start on harvesting their first crops of 2026 so that their cows have a high quality consistent nutrient source all year round 🌾 be sure to follow @dutchhollowfarm to learn more about their operations and get some behind the scenes footage of all that goes into dairy farming here in the #hudsonvalley!
